The adjudication pause has had devastating consequences for the Iranian American community and American society at large. Behind every case number caught in the pause is a person whose life has been placed in limbo — a student, a professional, a parent, a spouse, a neighbor — someone who came to this country, followed the rules, and built a future worth protecting. It also deprives America of talented researchers, scholars, and professionals who drive innovation and economic progress. That human reality is impossible to ignore: professionals, students, and families now risk losing their work authorization, their legal footing, and years of hard-earned progress, through no fault of their own. This legislation offers a necessary lifeline to alleviate the human consequences of this shortsighted policy. We applaud her and the other sponsors of this bill.
Throughout the pause, IALDF has received data and first-person accounts from those directly affected. The findings reveal families separated from loved ones, professionals unable to change roles or pursue new opportunities, financial hardship rippling through extended networks, couples postponing starting families, and graduates watching job offers disappear as their graduations are delayed. We were grateful for the opportunity to share these findings with Rep. Ansari's office to help inform legislation that reflects the real human stakes of this policy.
This bill also enshrines a principle IALDF has long maintained: the Iranian people and the Islamic Republic of Iran are not one and the same. Many Iranian nationals in the United States actively oppose the regime and would face persecution if forced to return. Punishing them for the actions of a government they reject is both unjust and contrary to American values.
IALDF urges members of Congress on both sides of the aisle to co-sponsor this legislation. The adjudication pause has gone on long enough. It is time to restore the fundamental promise that those who follow the law and play by the rules will be treated fairly.
